Sunset

I sat along the dike, having the scenery of a sunset. I stared. The sun finally set and I wondered why it does. The sky was covered with darkness and I wondered why it has to replace the amazing light. And so I thought, people only appreciate the light when darkness is about to come. We knew that anyway. I then thought that we only appreciate something when it is now too late. We love to see the sun sets but hate it when it finally does; we only appreciate something when it’s there but regret it when it’s completely gone.

In the Philippine context, the history of cinema has just only reached its centennial year with the beginnings from 1917 when Malayan Movies, a film company founded by Jose Nepomuceno and his brother Jesus, was established, to 1919 when the first Filipino feature film was produced – Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden), produced by the same company. Citizen Jake is a drama film that reflects the socio-political status of our country, directed and produced by Mike De Leon, a Filipino filmmaker who has created movies in the late 20th century which primarily reflect social realities in the Philippines. Citizen Jake is his latest creation after 19 years and the first movie of him that I watched. He is also one of the writers along with Noel Pascual and Atom Araullo (the lead actor of the movie). I got to watch the screening of Citizen Jake in UPLB at the D.L. Umali Hall last April 26, 2018 - sponsored by UP Cell Biological Society. The film highlights the current state of the Philippine political system, and how a single voice put into limelight the injustices within an existing political dynasty. Loose Accountability, No More

They say, “Promises are meant to be broken”; I say – that shouldn’t be the case when the people’s lives and the nation’s future are at stake. The power of promises and such declaration is extremely misused for personal and selfish interest of politicians running for office. History proves that they have utilized rhetoric speeches in order to convince, or to put it bluntly – to lure the electorate or all the people who have the power to vote in an election. We should learn from this and begin making these politicians accountable for their broken and false promises by suing them for non-fulfillment of platforms which they officially declared during campaigns. “If elected president, give me about three to six months, I will get rid of corruption, drugs and criminality,”  sounds familiar? The Historical Origin and Cultural Implications of Bañamos Festival of Los Baños, Laguna

The month is September and as a child, my grandmother would bring me to the town plaza to watch the Balye sa Kalye , the most awaited event in Bañamos festival of our municipality. This goes every year with my grandma until I grew older to watch other events of the festival by myself or with my friends. The festival was just colors and music, an entertainment, and an annual celebration until I gained the consciousness to wonder its origin and curiosity to ask its implications to the local culture, which set the rationale of this paper. Origin             The festival’s name Bañamos, which is a Spanish term meaning “we bathe”, is ascribed to the name of the municipality, Los Baños meaning “the baths”. This is due to the fact that the founding of Los Baños goes back to the Spanish colonization. Masasabing lahat ng tao pinapahalagan ito. Alam natin ang kahalagahan nito sa anumang relasyon: relasyon sa kapwa, sa kaibigan, sa pamilya, pati na rin sa sarili. 100 Tula Para Kay Stella (2017): A Stutterer's Review

My friend and I planned to watch three movie entries from Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) when we learned about it, let alone the enticing student ticket discount (100 pesos outside Metro Manila). One of our picks is 100 Tula Para Kay Stella - with a synopsis of: "A bittersweet romance about a shy, unassuming guy's secret love for one of his classmates who inspires him to write poetry as an outlet for his undeclared feelings." After watching its trailer, I had a reason to be more interested. The male lead has a speech defect that is similar with mine - stuttering. "How would he portray such character?" I asked, and this became my major reason for it to be my personal top pick from the movie entries.  To state abruptly, the movie didn't disappoint me ! Ignorance and Innocence

What's the purpose of Education? Is it to cure our innocence and ignorance, or just to turn the former into the latter? As I age each day, this idea has sprouted from the reality that life has offered me. I was taught that the main purpose of education is to cure the ignorance of people, to turn innocence into action, and to produce functional people for society. We can all agree with that, I hope. But what if education is just turning one's innocence into ignorance? I once saw a poster that somehow illustrates how education shapes people, especially children. The image shows a line of pupils and a teacher who shapes the round minds of the kids into a box using scissors. It wants to convey a strong message. The way I interpreted it was rather cynical. Education limits the human mind, or it is more right to say that school does.
