Somewhere In Between
I asked people to choose between hammer and nail. They have to choose only one - you're either a hammer or a nail; you cannot be both.
It's actually one of my favorite questions. Are you a hammer or a nail?
You see, there are two kinds of people - the hammer and the nail. I got interested asking people to know which one would they choose to be. Somehow, it speaks a lot about them.
The thing that I observed upon asking several people is that they all interpret it differently. Some did literally, most did figuratively.
You'd know if they choose this one over the other just because it's what they want to be rather who they truly are. You'll know whether what they answered is their true nature or it is just their desire and that they are not courageous enough to admit that they are the one they did not choose. Again, it speaks a lot about them.
However, upon asking people, I have realized a new answer - SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN. I broke my own rule since I firmly demand to only have one of the two, not somewhere in between of being a hammer and a nail.
What does it feel to be somewhere in between?
Are you somewhere between the pain causer and the pain catcher?
Are you somewhere between the head and the tail when a coin is flipped?
Are you somewhere between the extrovert and the introvert?
Are you somewhere between the brave and the coward who always pretends to be otherwise?
Are you somewhere between the catalyst of others and the inhibitor of yourself?
Are you? Because I am, I am somewhere in between.
I cause pain. I inflict agony on people through my words and through my silence. However, that doesn't spare me from pain. My disappointments, my frustrations, my longing are the kinds of pain I have to suffer. So am I the causer of pain or is it I who gets pained? I guess I am somewhere in between.
They say, INDECISION IS A DECISION - that you choose not to decide. That's why whenever a coin is flipped, I do not know which side to pick. What are the odds, right? What are the chances that I'd get it right?? I fear that the outcome would be the opposite side. That is why I am not a head; I am not a tail; I am somewhere in between.
Ambivert. That's the term if you have the characteristics of both an extrovert and an introvert. That's what you call if you are somewhere in the middle. According to forbes.com, I am likely to be an ambivert since (1) I can perform tasks alone or in a group; I don’t have much preference either way. (2) Social settings don’t make me uncomfortable, but I tire of being around people too much.(3) Being the center of attention is fun for me, but I don’t like it to last. (4) Some people think I’m quiet, while others think I’m highly social. (5) I don’t always need to be moving, but too much downtime leaves me feeling bored. (6) I can get lost in my own thoughts just as easily as I can lose myself in a conversation. (7) Small talk doesn’t make me uncomfortable, but it does get boring. (8) When it comes to trusting other people, sometimes I’m skeptical, and other times, I dive right in. (9) If I spend too much time alone, I get bored, yet too much time around other people leaves me feeling drained.
"BE BRAVE even if you're not. Pretend to be. No one can tell the difference."
I am not brave; I am not a coward either. I am somewhere in between.
One notable response I got from asking people is how they interpret a hammer positively. "Because, though the hammer hurts the nail by hitting it, the nail is put in the rightful place. -JAV". The hammer acts as a catalyst; it pushes people to fulfill their potential. However, the hammer can also be an inhibitor; using its claw to withdraw the nails from its rightful place. You see, a tool can only be a tool if used according to its function but it can also do the opposite if used contrary to its purpose.
