Citizen Jake (2018): A Movie Review

Citizen Jake is a drama film that reflects the socio-political status of our country, directed and produced by Mike De Leon, a Filipino filmmaker who has created movies in the late 20th century which primarily reflect social realities in the Philippines. Citizen Jake is his latest creation after 19 years and the first movie of him that I watched. He is also one of the writers along with Noel Pascual and Atom Araullo (the lead actor of the movie). I got to watch the screening of Citizen Jake in UPLB at the D.L. Umali Hall last April 26, 2018 - sponsored by UP Cell Biological Society. The film highlights the current state of the Philippine political system, and how a single voice put into limelight the injustices within an existing political dynasty. Citizen Jake aims to interrogate and not turn a blind eye on the current tyranny within our society. A timely and relevant topic for everyone. For this year's summer getaway, I and my friends went to Manuel Uy Beach Resort, located in Calatagan, Batangas last April 14-15, 2018. The Historical Origin and Cultural Implications of Bañamos Festival of Los Baños, Laguna

The month is September and as a child, my grandmother would bring me to the town plaza to watch the Balye sa Kalye , the most awaited event in Bañamos festival of our municipality. This goes every year with my grandma until I grew older to watch other events of the festival by myself or with my friends. The festival was just colors and music, an entertainment, and an annual celebration until I gained the consciousness to wonder its origin and curiosity to ask its implications to the local culture, which set the rationale of this paper. Origin             The festival’s name Bañamos, which is a Spanish term meaning “we bathe”, is ascribed to the name of the municipality, Los Baños meaning “the baths”. This is due to the fact that the founding of Los Baños goes back to the Spanish colonization. "Years from now, after I graduate I'll go back to my school and direct its plays," I told my Mom as we have our dinner. The very next day I was called by our school principal, Tr. Glo, and told me this, "I want you to be the assistant director of Sir Mike."  Sir Michael Medina is our resident director since the school started producing Disney's Musical Plays, and for this year's school play - he's going to direct Beauty and the Beast Jr. once more (as the school already did the same play ten years ago).  Having heard my principal, my mind was like "That escalated quickly." I was flattered by the offer. All I had to do is say YES and take it, and so I did. I even managed to make an anecdote out of my last night's conversation with my Mom and shared it with Tr. Loose Accountability, No More

They say, “Promises are meant to be broken”; I say – that shouldn’t be the case when the people’s lives and the nation’s future are at stake. The power of promises and such declaration is extremely misused for personal and selfish interest of politicians running for office. History proves that they have utilized rhetoric speeches in order to convince, or to put it bluntly – to lure the electorate or all the people who have the power to vote in an election. We should learn from this and begin making these politicians accountable for their broken and false promises by suing them for non-fulfillment of platforms which they officially declared during campaigns. “If elected president, give me about three to six months, I will get rid of corruption, drugs and criminality,”  sounds familiar? “Napakahirap makuha pero napakadaling mawala.”  Isang bagay na kailangan mo munang paghirapan bago mo makuha nang buo. Tunay na mahirap, tunay na komplikado, at tunay na mahalaga; ito ang tiwala! Masasabing lahat ng tao pinapahalagan ito. Alam natin ang kahalagahan nito sa anumang relasyon: relasyon sa kapwa, sa kaibigan, sa pamilya, pati na rin sa sarili. Ngunit alam ba talaga natin ang totoong kahalagan nito? Ang tiwala ang nagsisilbing sandigan ng anumang relasyon. Ito ang nagpapanatili ng samahan upang magpatuloy at lalong tumatag. I was sitting on a bench in my favorite spot when a girl sat beside me. I didn’t mind her at first because I was busy looking at the view in front of me. I turned my head to see her face and learned that she was crying.  “Miss,” I called as I offer my handkerchief. She accepted it and thanked me.  “Are you okay?” I asked.  She answered that she’s not fine and started to cry a little louder.  “I just broke up with my boyfriend,” she started.  “ I knew that I’m not the only one, but I loved him!” she cried.  “December 15, it was my worst birthday. I saw him with another girl. They were eating at our favorite place. He used to surprise me with Camote cue. It’s my favorite. Damn!
