A Movie Review: Sila-Sila (2019)

Too normal yet resounding, personal but all-encompassing. The statement lies in the subtlety of multiple narratives ingrained in each character and their connection that makes up the film. "Nakakapagod ba akong alagaan?" "Kung alam mo lang."   Sila-Sila (The Same People) is a story of several people. They say it's not a ghost story but a ghosting story. Oh, the nuances indeed. The nuances are paradoxically easy to feel. Regardless of your gender or sexual orientation, you would feel the intimacy, the agony, the desire, the silent but loud feelings. Even the awkwardness, tension, the push and pull drive of the impulse, Gab (Gio Gahol) embodies such persona which displays a conflicted mind and heart. The Historical Origin and Cultural Implications of Bañamos Festival of Los Baños, Laguna

The month is September and as a child, my grandmother would bring me to the town plaza to watch the Balye sa Kalye , the most awaited event in Bañamos festival of our municipality. This goes every year with my grandma until I grew older to watch other events of the festival by myself or with my friends. The festival was just colors and music, an entertainment, and an annual celebration until I gained the consciousness to wonder its origin and curiosity to ask its implications to the local culture, which set the rationale of this paper. Origin             The festival’s name Bañamos, which is a Spanish term meaning “we bathe”, is ascribed to the name of the municipality, Los Baños meaning “the baths”. This is due to the fact that the founding of Los Baños goes back to the Spanish colonization. This version has additional yaps and edits.] I didn’t go home to Laguna after my graduation in UP Diliman. I stayed in Quezon City and started looking for jobs. I remember applying for a management trainee position at an oil company, which did not work out even after passing various interview stages, an aptitude test, and a random concept presentation before a panel. “Summer capital of the Philippines,” ganito binansagan ang lugar na Baguio City. Sa aking mga paglalakbay, isa ang Baguio sa aking mga hindi malilimutan. Tatlong beses na akong nakarating dito: ang unang dalawa (Septyembre 2007 at Mayo 2016) ay kasama ang aking pamilya at ang huli ay field trip sa aming paaralan (Oktubre 2016). “Hindi nakakasawa,” sabi ko sa aking isipan nang makarating muli ako.             Malamig ang klima rito, batid naman ito ng nakakarami; ito na siguro ang pangunahing dahilan ng mga turista sa kanilang pagbisita. Subalit bukod sa malamig na klima, tunay na marami pang maipagmamalaki ang Baguio! Isa na rito ang Burnham Park , ang itinuturing puso ng Baguio. Walang papel, walang ballpen, walang assignment, walang pasok! Ganyan ang buhay estudyante, masarap, mahirap, madali, nakakainis, at nakakapagod . Masarap maging estudyante kasi araw-araw may baon. Mahirap lalo na kapag maraming assignments at proyekto. Madali kapag nabubuhay ka sa hingi. Nakakainis kapag palaging napapagalitan ng guro at nakakapagod gumising ng umaga. Buhay estudyante! Madaming nangyayari sa isang estudyante. Marami kang nararanasan na kung ano-ano. Mapagalitan, mapatayo, mapahiya, bumagsak, mapatawag sa office, magkaroon ng kaibigan, makipag-away , gumala, magsaya, umuwi ng gabi, magsinungaling, gumawa ng kalokohan at lalo na ang umibig . Walang araw na hindi magtatawanan ang barkada. Naranasan mo nang bumagsak at nakalimutang may assignment. Madalas kang kumopya at manggaya. Mahigit isang daang araw na ang lumipas nang kailanganin natin maghigpit. Tanda ko pa noon na nagdalawang isip ako kung uuwi ako sa’min. Dormer ako at may nabalitaang may dalawa o tatlong posibleng kaso sa campus. Naka-quarantine na naman daw. Propesor daw na galing sa ibang bansa tapos nagturo agad. Agad din naman tinunton ang mga lugar at tao na pinuntahan at nakasalamuha. Nagpadala ng mga pribadong mensahe at pinagquarantine din ang mga estudyante at kapwa-guro. Nalaman ko ang balita mula sa naging kaklase ko sa isang GE na nakatanggap mismo ng liham at hiling na mag self-quarantine muna. “Ibang kolehiyo naman,” naisip ko. Sapat ang distansya ng magkakalayong gusali; sobrang lawak naman ng unibersidad. Ako nga na sopomor, hindi ko pa rin nalilibot ang sangkalupaan ng eskwelehan ko. Walang dapat ikabahala.
